What to Call the Dad of a Type 1 Diabetic Funny
Reddit has come to the defense of a father who publicly called out his daughter's school nurse.
According to the man's Reddit post—which was posted in the popular forum, "Am I The A**hole" under the username u/AITAGlucoseFather—the father explained that his diabetic daughter had fainted on the school bus and was taken to the hospital. So far, the post has received nearly 11,000 votes and over 1,500 comments.
"My daughter has T1D [type 1 diabetes], and has been diagnosed since she was 5," the father explained at the beginning of his post. "We have a 504 plan in place at her school and have had it in place since diagnosis. I have conferences with teachers every year, and since she started at the middle school this year, her new nurse and administrative staff."
Earlier this week, however, he received a call that his daughter had been taken to the hospital because she fainted on the bus ride home. The father drove to the hospital to meet his daughter and, once it was determined she was okay, the pair went home.
Naturally, the father was concerned, so he asked his daughter about the events leading up to the hospital visit.
"I needed to make sure she wasn't ignoring her symptoms and had eaten lunch," the father explained. "She told me that she felt weird just before the end of the day, and checked her sugar with her teacher, who had sent her to the nurse when it was really low.
"When she told the nurse she needed glucagon, the nurse said no and she should take it at home when she gets there."
When the father heard this, he became enraged.
"The nurse did not give her her medication AND THEN SENT HER TO THE BUS," the father wrote. "The 504 plan in place has a stipulation that if her blood sugar is too low at the end of the day, she cannot take the bus home.
"The nurse is supposed to give her glucagon and I get called to pick her up/arrange someone to take her home. The bus drivers aren't trained to know what to look for or to give her medication," he continued.
He arranged to meet with the school's administrative staff but also took to Facebook to publicly call out the school nurse.
His friends and coworkers felt that he took it too far, so he asked Reddit: "AITA [am I the a**hole] for publicly calling out the school nurse?"
According to the CDC, type 1 diabetes is typically diagnosed in children, teens and/or young adults.
"If you have type 1 diabetes, your pancreas doesn't make insulin or makes very little insulin," the CDC said. "Insulin is a hormone that helps blood sugar enter the cells in your body where it can be used for energy. Without insulin, blood sugar can't get into cells and builds up in the bloodstream."
Type 1 diabetics must take insulin every day and regularly check their blood sugar levels in order to prevent the development of other health problems, the CDC continued.
If a person notices that their blood sugar has dropped, they may be able to eat certain snacks to get back on track. In more severe cases, however, injectable glucagon is necessary.
Redditors were quick to defend the father's decision to post about the incident on social media.
"NTA [not the a**hole]. The nurse neglected a medical plan and your daughter got sick because of it. I'd do the same thing. If she can't care for the children and do her job then she doesn't need to be a nurse," said u/Far_Seat_2223.
"NTA, and OP [original poster] might be saving lives by putting this out there. What happens if a kid has an allergic reaction or an asthma attack, and this nurse decides it's not a big deal? She's already shown she doesn't care about 504s, so she deserves the public dragging," added u/lilmxfi.
"Honestly OP just did a huge favor for kids and parents of that school. Now the school can hopefully fire her and get a competent nurse," replied u/CaptainnCrunch.
